As one of the country's leading experts on NHS medical premises, John heads the Healthcare Division centred in St Albans .

John is recognised as an expert and arbitrator by the President of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and regularly receives such appointments. In addition, in respect of healthcare, he acts as Chairman of the RICS Working Party and, on occasions, has undertaken a consultancy role to the BMA. More recently, John was one of the founding members of the Primary Care Premises Forum.

John joined Aitchisons in the late 1970's and saw through its takeover by TSB Property Services. In 1997 he was a key member in the management buyout from Lloyds TSB and the formation of Aitchison Raffety in its present format. He has been chairman of the company since 1997.

Throughout his career in Aitchisons, TSB Property Services and then Aitchison Raffety, John has undertaken numerous roles and his responsibilities. These have varied from the current Healthcare team to the residential surveyors (at one time he was the director in charge of all TSB Property Services' residential, commercial and agricultural surveyors and agents) and, in the early days at Aitchisons, he was responsible for the residential estate agency and surveying operation.
